IISL joined Sherman&Howard for organising the one-day space law and regulation track at the 2013 Space Symposium of the Space Foundation in Colorado Springs on 18 April 2023.

This year’s Space Symposium saw another expansion of space law from a session to a full-day track. Organised by IISL leader Skip Smith from Sherman&Howard, who has been inviting IISL to support the space law activities at the Space Symposium since 2019, this year’s discussions evolved around four topics, organised in panel format (see the full programme here):

  • Regulatory update
  • Space deals
  • Risk management models for space activities
  • Legal counsels forum

Highlight of the track was the keynote by Diane Howard, Director Commercial Space in the US National Space Council, White House and former IISL Vice President (text see below). The photo shows her with Skip Smith and Kai-Uwe Schrogl.

Numerous IISL members were among the audience, to highlight Member Laura Cummings, who moderated the Regulatory Update panel and Treasurer Dennis Burnett from HawkEye360, which co-sponsored the dinner of the track. IISL President Kai-Uwe Schrogl introduced the Institute in his welcome address, pointing at its influential US activities besides the Space Symposium, such as the annual Galloway Symposium and the dynamic North American round of the IISL Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition.
